Vestibul

In the historic center of Split, within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, the Vestibule terrace represents one of the city’s most valuable and impressive viewpoints. Situated above the former imperial vestibule that once connected the Peristyle with the residential quarters of the palace, this terrace today offers a rare and comprehensive view of Split’s historic, urban, and natural landscape.

The Vestibule Terrace – a viewpoint that reveals the layers of Split.

From this elevated vantage point, an exceptional panorama unfolds: rising prominently nearby is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, one of the strongest vertical accents in the city’s skyline. The view then stretches across the dense cluster of stone houses and red-tiled roofs of the old town, revealing layers of architecture shaped from antiquity through the early modern period. To the south, the sea comes into sight, and in the distance the outlines of the Dalmatian islands enclose the horizon in a distinctive Mediterranean backdrop.

The value of the terrace lies not only in the attractiveness of its view, but also in the perspective it provides: from this point, the urban logic of the palace and the organic development of the city that grew from it can be clearly understood. It is a place where the relationship between the imperial residence, its medieval transformations, and contemporary Split can be grasped within a single frame. The Vestibule terrace is therefore not merely an addition to the historic setting, but its natural extension—a belvedere that unites monumental heritage with openness toward the sea, offering visitors an authentic and unforgettable experience of the city.
